Seam dips vary from 3#186; to 20#186; at the outcrop. The coal occurs in the Balikpapan and Pulubalang Formations and the three main coal seams are called Kedapat, Pinang, and Sangatta. The coal is generally lowash and lowsulfur and has low insitu moisture content.
East Kalimantan is the heartland of Indonesias coal industry, and is pockmarked with abandoned coal mines. #0183;#32;PT Berau Coal has three principal open cut mining operations; Lati, Binungan, and Sambarata, located in an 118,400 hectare concession area. From the Lati mine the coal is blended to produce the brands of Agathis and Sungkai. Total mineable coal resources delineated in Lati todate are in excess of 465 million tonnes.
Seven other major coal producers are having their first generation Coal Contracts of Works (CCoW) mining licenses expire over the next five years. These producers include majors like Bumi Resources, Adaro Energy, Kideco and Berau. As much as 70% of the total Indonesian production is accounted for by the CCoW miners.
Coal production has grown exponentially since the coal mines were reopened in 1993. In 1999, coal production reached 74 million metric tons, which increased further to 353 million tons in 2011. As of 2014, only two countries were above Indonesia in the coal mining sector.
